The Importance of Knowing Your Needles: Precision Matters in Permanent Makeup
Let’s talk needles—because when it comes to permanent makeup, the right needle can make or break your work. Whether you're just starting or you're a seasoned artist, understanding the difference between needles and knowing exactly when to use them is key to achieving flawless results. There’s no “one size fits all” in permanent makeup, especially when you’re working on different areas of the face or body. And yes, whether it’s ombre brows, eyeliner, or lips, the needle you choose plays a massive role in the outcome.
Needle on the Bar vs. Cartridge Needles: What’s the Difference?
First, let’s break down the two main types of needles we use in our field: Needle on the Bar and Cartridge Needles.
-
Needle on the Bar: These are your traditional style tattoo needles. They’re attached to a bar and are used with coil or rotary tattoo machines.
-
Cartridge Needles: Ah, the modern wonders. These are compatible with pen-style machines, making them more versatile and beginner-friendly. Cartridge needles are popular for their ease of use.
So, When Do You Use What?
Choosing the right needle depends on a few things: the area you're working on, the type of pigment you're using, and the desired result. Here’s a quick breakdown:
-
Brows: My personal favorite is the 1208RS. This gives you the perfect powder brow. Soft edges, easy coverage, and you’re able to work with dilution to get a variety of results.
-
Eyeliner: A favorite of mine for wing eyeliner is using both a 0903RL to outline and secure in my shape then a 1205RS to fill in the eyeliner design. I also use a 1205RS for a classic lash line enhancement. Packs in color effortlessly.
-
Lip Blushing: For my lip procedures I enjoy outlining with a 0903RL and then since it’s a larger surface area I fill them in with a 1218RS. You can get both a lip blush and a lipstick look using the 1218RS! I find this larger needle option better as it allows the procedure to heal and last for years to come!
Why Mastering Needles Makes You a Better Artist
Sure, the machines we use are important, but needles are where the magic happens. The more you know about your needles, the more versatile and precise you’ll be in your work. Different skin types, textures, and areas of the face require different needles and techniques, so staying sharp (pun intended) on this knowledge gives you a serious edge.
